How To Teach Reading Without Textbooks? - Aminuwrites Tv

How To Teach Reading Without Textbook?

Most of the schools in Ghana have little or no TextBook.

But, the situation has become the norm rather than the exception in Public Basic Schools.

This has left many teachers stranded. Some have resorted to Photocopying parts of books to be used as Reading Materials in the classroom.

But, is Textbook Really Relevant? TextBook is very relevant.

However, in the 21st Century TextBook is gradually and increasingly losing its relevance.

Today, children and even the adults are not interested in reading long text.

We don't have that time to read an entire book or material over a long period.

The attention span of people towards reading Textbook has dropped significantly.

These days even Musicians who sometimes ago were producing Albums have all resorted to just a single Track.

Reading has taken another dimension. So must the Teaching of Reading.

Most of the people against Textbook claim Textbook limits the Reader's Scope of Learning, produces Stereotyped Learners and limits children's vocabulary developments.

How to Teach Reading in the 21st Century?

There are Simple but effective ways to teach Reading without the use of Textbooks.

1. Pictures Approach

2. Sentences Approach

3. Phonic Approach

Pictures Approach

In this approach, the Facilitator use pictures to Teach Reading.

The Facilitator display the Picture (s) on the board.

Learners are expected to mention what they can see in the picture.

How To Teach Reading Without Textbook?

The Facilitator writes down what learners have identified from the picture.

The Facilitator turn the words or items identified meaningful Sentences, Paragraphs or Passages.

Learners are assisted to identify and pronounce unfamiliar words.

Learners take turns to read the passage or text with guidance from the Facilitator where necessary.

Questions from the passage or text are asked to check for understanding of text.

Watch The Video Here

2. The Sentence Approach

The Facilitator writes s simple sentence on the chalkboard and ask learners to read.

Questions are asked based on the Sentence on the Board.

Eg.

Esi did not come to school today.

Questions...

1. Who did not come to school today?

2. Who was absent from school today?

3. Why was Esi absent from school today?

4. What will happen to Esi if she comes to school tomorrow?

5. Who else is absent today? Etc.

The Facilitator assist learners to answer the questions in sentence form.

3. Phonic Approach

There are Several Phonic Reading Approach.

But, in this write up, we will recommend Jolly Approach.

Jolly Learning Approach, is the best Phonic Approach to Teaching Reading.

Connecting the Dots - AminuwritesTv

Connecting the Dots.

Every lesson, topic, or sub - strands is a Dot in the life of the learner.

Connecting these Dots is the general aim of the Curriculum.

The work of the teacher is to help the child connect these Dots.

These Dots if carefully connected would help mould, transform and bring out the hidden Dots in the life of the child.

The situation currently  in our schools, unfortunate, as it may be, is the pressure from the Society and Government for teachers to dwell on the Dots but not necessarily teach the Dots.

Society is unnecessarily demanding from teachers, what I called 'Wishful Thinking'.

Standardized testing regime does not help teachers to Connects these Dots.

Very soon, our children at the Basic School Level would be forced to undertake a Meaningless, Intimidating and Stressful One Week Marathon of Recalling also called BECE. Their elder brothers and sisters are also taking the WASSCE.

These Exams, that is the Basic Education Certificate Examination and the West African Senior Secondary Certificate Examinations, have nothing to do with these Dots.

They don't measure whether these Dots as contained in the Curriculum have been Connected.

Take for Example, in our English Curriculum, a JHS Child should be able to Fill and Complete a Form. But, just invite a typical JHS or an SHS Graduate and give him or her  a Simple Admission forms to Fill. Just try it.

It is time we connect these Dots. It is time we look for these Dots in our Curriculum and Connect them.

Government should provide all the necessary tools to help teachers Connects these Dots. No school in the 21st Century should be without Electricity or a Computer.

Our children are already stressed. These Exams Regime is Stressful. But, the truth is, it doe not measure any meaningful Dots in the life of the child.

If you really want to know the number of Unconnected Dots, just look at the huge number of Ghanaian Children looking for Employment.

What we can do in the interim, is to abolish the BECE and the WASSCE. We must empower the teacher to Connect the Dots. Activity Based lessons should be encouraged and rewarded.

The time to Connect these Dots is Now....

How to teach Collaboration Skills in learners? - AminuwritesTv

How to teach Collaboration as a skill?

But,  What is Collaboration or Collaborative Skills?

Collaboration skills , also called collaborative skills, are the skills you use when working with others to produce or create something or achieve a common goal. Collaboration skills aren't a skill set in themselves, but rather a group of different soft skills and behaviours that facilitate collaboration and teamwork.

Collaboration is one of the chief skills or competencies that every Ghanaian child should posses after completing the Standard Based Curriculum.

Collaboration is also a 21st Century Skills which every Child or Adult must possess.

There are several ways we can teach Collaboration Skills among our learners. Below are just few steps you can take to build Collaboration Skills among learners.

Give Group Exercise/Assignments
1. Always Give Group Exercise or Assignment.
Encourage your learners to always work in groups. Every exercise or assignment you give to learners should be carried out in groups.
Ensure that every learner participates in the Exercise or Assignment.

Group Engineered Assignments
2. Give Assignment or Exercise that forces Group Activities.
Also, give learners exercises or assignment that might force them to include every member of the group when carrying out the assignment.
Our questions be crafted in such a way that it makes it difficult for a learner to work alone.
Our questions should be capable of ensuring that every member of the class gets something to do.
For instance instead of asking learners to answer questions which only focuses or Understanding, we may craft our questions to test the application of knowledge.

For example in the questions below...

1. What is energy?
2. Give two examples of energy forms.

We can easily rewrite the questions to encourage every learner in the class to participate.

So in the above example the questions may be reframed in the following manner.

1. Describe how energy is important in carrying out work.
2. How will you describe the different forms of energy to your friend.

Accept Collaborative Answers
3. Always Accept Answers or Assignments from learners who worked collaboratedly.
In class, any questions or assignment you give, ensure that all learners participate in arriving at the answers.

Why Should You Teach Collaborative Skills?
Every Ghanaian child is expected to learn and practice Collaborative Skills.

The world today  basically operates on Collaboration.

No country or nation can exist independently without the support of others. Even the most advanced countries collaborate with other countries in one form or the other.

Teaching Collaboration Skills is a unique opportunity to provide learners with one of the most important and a necessary skills for human existence.

Also, when Collaboration Skills is developed among learners then we stand the chance of developing other important Soft Skills such as

1. Communication Skills
2. Leadership Skills
3. Team work Skills
4. Conflict Resolution Skills
5. Flexibility/Adaptability Skills
6. Problem Solving Skills
7. Negotiation Skills
8. Networking Skills
9. Stress Management Skills
10. Creativity & Innovative Skills
11. Time Management Skills
12. Decision Making Skills
13. Influencing/Persuasion Skills

Who tied the teacher's hand? - AminuWritesTv

Pause4Education

AminuWritesDaily Broadcast.

Topic: Who tied the Teacher's Hands?

Hope grace and mercy find you.

In this discussion we would be looking at the topic : Who tied the Teacher's Hands?

Most of the things we use to do in schools such as hitting, spanking,  caning, etc have all been banned in Ghanaian schools.

This situation has left most teachers handicapped when it comes to training children.

Some believe that their hands have been tied and therefore cannot do anything. So it is a common sight these days to see children with long nails, overgrown hair, bleached skin, sexy school uniforms, etc.

But, can we blame the teachers? May be yes. But, I think it's No.

Yes because, at least to the best of my knowledge every school has at least a copy (Soft copy/Hard Copy) of Positive Discipline Tools designed by the Guidance and Counseling Division of the Ghana Education Service.

But, No because most teachers have little or No information on the Positive Discipline Tools.

Children need to be trained, coached and mentored.

Today's child is totally different from yesterday's child. Our punishment and corrections strategy must also change to meet the 21st Century training needs of our children.

We, must not sit and watch these kids deteriorate. Get a copy of the Positive Discipline Tools from your Headteacher or School Improvement Support Officer, or the District Guidance and Counseling Coordinator to abreast yourself with modern and tested correction and punishment strategies for the 21st Century Child.

Thank you.

teaching in masks - AminuWrites Tv

School is in Session now. Teaching during thisperiod is indeed a difficult task.

Corona has come to affect our life styles. It will take a long time for things to be normal.

It is during times like this that the expertise and efficiency of great teachers like you are put to test.

Teaching in Mask is one of the most difficult task for all teachers.
This means a paradigm shift in the way we teach.

Creative Pedagogy should be used and adopted by all teachers during this pandemic to make our lessons less stressful and enjoyable.

Activity Based lessons should be activated in our classrooms to reduce long talks and 'sermons'.

This should however be done tackfully to avoid children contacting and engaging unduly with their peers.

We must as all times ensure that our children, colleagues and ourselves are all in masks.

Punishment Versus Corrections

Schools do not have to punish children in order to correct them.

We can correct children without punishing them.

Children do not need to be spanked, insulted or hurt before we correct them. Corrections can be done without inflicting pain or causing injury.

Today's child is totally different from yesterday's child. What yesterday's child would see and run, today's child would see and go there to find out why.

Yesterday's child does not ask why questions. Whatever they were told they believe that to be true. Today's child would not only ask why. But would want to know why not.

So what we see as grave errors or sin, today's child sees it as adventure. He or she sees adventure as been able to beat the system. They want to outmart the system. They want to know what is in the radio set or television which make people to talk or sing. They want to open the radio or television to look for the people in the radio or television.

A child who absents himself or herself from school may not be just a truant. He or she may be calling for attention. He or she may need some counselling and not canes. He or she may need special assistance. He might be running away from school because of you the teacher. Yes, sometimes we scare the children unknowingly.

Children may not be what we actually think. Their behaviour might be an opportunity for change or counselling.

Always study a behaviour, try and identify the root causes and the immediate causes. Look for workable solutions to help the child.

Enough of the unionism

Enough Unionism

Every teacher in Ghana belongs to a teacher union.

There are more unions in the education sector than any other sector of the Ghanaian economy.

But, is it worth joining these unions? Are they really fighting for the teacher's welfare?

Are the teachers committed to seeing that the unions succeed to champion their course?

Sometimes, I think teachers usually and on most occasions should blame their leaders not governments. Almost all the teacher unions have been in existence for sometime now. Some spaning over decades. But, what do we have to show?

Sometimes, it very pathetic when you see a colleague teacher on radio or television soliciting for funds to undergo some surgical operations.

Common Hospital too we cannot build as teachers not to talk about the morgue.

Teachers too deserve the best and not better. We cannot continue to blame governments for all our woes.

Governments would begin to respect the teacher the day teacher unions begin to pay their members whose salaries have gone off for some months. Governments would begin to respect the teacher when the unions pay the salaries of striking teachers in situations when governments refuse to pay.

But, sometimes, we have to blame ourselves. Our leaders are too partisan that their true colours are not hidden when their party is either in government or in opposition.

Some of our leaders use the position to champion the course of their political pay masters in order to be given juicy appointments when their party take up the mantle of leadership. We all know union leaders who have gotten juicy appointments in both NDC and NPP administrations.

We cannot continue to create new teacher unions and expect different results. What we can do in the interim is to put pressure on leadership to fight for our course.

We must begin to show interest in the activities of GNAT, NAGRAT, CCT, TEWU, UTAG, Innovative Teachers, etc. Politically induced leaders should be removed and replaced where necessary.

We must as a matter of urgency establish the Teacher's Bank, the Teacher's Hospital, the Teacher's Satellite TV, the Teacher's Morgue, etc.

Our accrued funds should be invested in high income but risk - free businesses to increase our revenue base.

All teacher unions must be seen to be speaking on one common voice. Our differences should be buried when we are at the negotiating table.

We cannot continue to look on whiles some teachers graduate from our Universities only to sell dog chains, iced kenkey, bread and pure water, when we know there are lots of vacancies that can accommodate them.

We cannot sit unconcerned whiles teachers troop to the Controller and Accountant General's Department to resolve salary issues. Some teachers travel from Savelugu, Talensi, Bimbilla, Amedzope, Have, Buipe, etc to Accra just to have their salaries restored or corrected.

Similarly, we cannot sit and watch schools without appropriate teaching and learning materials to teach our future generations. Teachers should not be party to the destruction of our future generations. We must make our voices heard loud and clear. Our silence is far too long.

We as teachers and our unions must have and push for a permanent interest - to see to the welfare of the Ghanaian teacher. The time for divisiveness, selfishness, and hypocrisy is over.

The teacher should enjoy whiles on Earth, for whether he or she goes to heaven or hell, lies in the bossom of the Almighty.

The teacher also deserve their reward on Earth!

Aluta Continual!

The Centre Cannot Hold

The Centre Cannot Hold....

The JHS Boy who manufactured his car
Education should not be seen as the opium of the masses. It should not create, build and nurture mediocrity, laziness, and uncreative individuals.

Our education system should not force all children to think a certain way. We are all not the same. Common Core Program should not be equated common thinking or Common idealogy.

What we have ended up creating is a bunch of unemployed and uninspired graduates who do not fit for the job market.

Our education system has not been synchronized with industry. We are currently running a parallel education system.

We must not move away from the core values of education, which is to make the individual fit to live and be lived with.

We, must begin to engage captains of industry to help us in Designing our curriculum. These experts should include but not limited to artisans, engineers, architects, manufacturers, etc.

We must begin to liase with industry so that whiles teachers teach the theoritical bits of the curriculum the industry would train the learners on the practical aspect of the curriculum.

Our assessment system should not be a one stop event. It should be a process. Continuous Assessment should be part and parcel of our education system. Examinations, instead of it been used for promotion and grading, should be used to promote and modernize learning. Assessment should be design purposely to improve learning.

Repetitive and meaningless knowledge should be discareded from the curriculum. Knowledge should be meaningful both in the present and in the future. We should design learning in such a way that it would improve teaching and learning.

Our teachers and educational authorities should avoid measuring knowledge but should rather exert all efforts at measuring knowledge application.

The time is now more than ever to champion for a radical change in our educational system. We should not allow our intuition and upbringing to cloud and influence our curriculum design.

Ours should be to move with time. We should aim at improving lives and reducing unemployment in our society. We should not dedicate most of our time towards learning language when our focus should have been on Technology, Agriculture and Health.

No nation develops by learning and improving the speaking of a foreign language. Learning a foreign language's main purpose should be for communication but not to measure intelligence.

We should not boast about improving enrolment but should be about improving lives, increasing employment, improving the use of technology, etc. It is only when this is done that we can boast about improving education at any given time.

Ghana deserves best and not better. Better is too small for us. The time to do that is now.
