LETTER TO MY TEACHER

I am sorry, I am using the wrong medium. I don’t know how you will react when I come to you face to face on this issue. 

Sir, I am a practicing Muslim and a stunts believer in the Islamic Faith. 

Ramadhan is one of the most revered months in the Islamic Calendar. 

During this period I sleep late and wake up early. I also stay away from food, sweet, water, gossips, biscuits, fruits, ice cream, etc from dawn to dusk. 

Sir, I may look tired, weak, stressed and lonely. Sometimes, I may be dozing off in your lessons. Please don’t think I don’t like your lessons but, it is the nature of the exercise I am going through.

But, it is not every day I may show these signs. 

I may not be at the Dinning Hall or at the Canteen throughout this period. I pray you bear with me during this period.

I am pleading with you through this medium to inform your colleagues and others who may deal directly with Muslim children during this period.

Sir, help me complete this year’s Ramadhan with ease. 

May Allah or God be with you and all teachers around the globe.

How To Teach Reading Without Textbook?

Most of the schools in Ghana have little or no TextBook. 

But, the situation has become the norm rather than the exception in Public Basic Schools.

This has left many teachers stranded. Some have resorted to Photocopying parts of books to be used as Reading Materials in the classroom.

But, is Textbook Really Relevant? TextBook is very relevant. 

However, in the 21st Century TextBook is gradually and increasingly losing its relevance. 

Today, children and even the adults are not interested in reading long text. 

We don't have that time to read an entire book or material over a long period. 

The attention span of people towards reading Textbook has dropped significantly.

These days even Musicians who sometimes ago were producing Albums have all resorted to just a single Track. 

Reading has taken another dimension. So must the Teaching of Reading.

Most of the people against Textbook claim Textbook limits the Reader's Scope of Learning, produces Stereotyped Learners and limits children's vocabulary developments.

How to Teach Reading in the 21st Century?

There are Simple but effective ways to teach Reading without the use of Textbooks.

1. Pictures Approach

Pictures Approach

In this approach, the Facilitator use pictures to Teach Reading. 

The Facilitator display the Picture (s) on the board.

Learners are expected to mention what they can see in the picture. 

How To Teach Reading Without Textbook?


The Facilitator writes down what learners have identified from the picture.

The Facilitator turn the words or items identified meaningful Sentences, Paragraphs or Passages. 

Learners are assisted to identify and pronounce unfamiliar words.

Learners take turns to read the passage or text with guidance from the Facilitator where necessary.

Questions from the passage or text are asked to check for understanding of text.

2. The Sentence Approach

The Facilitator writes s simple sentence on the chalkboard and ask learners to read. 

Questions are asked based on the Sentence on the Board.

Eg. 

Esi did not come to school today. 


Questions...

1. Who did not come to school today?

2. Who was absent from school today?

3. Why was Esi absent from school today? 

4. What will happen to Esi if she comes to school tomorrow?

5. Who else is absent today? Etc. 

The Facilitator assist learners to answer the questions in sentence form.

For instance instead of asking learners to answer questions which only focuses or Understanding, we may craft our questions to test the application of knowledge.

For example in the questions below...

1. What is energy?
2. Give two examples of energy forms.

We can easily rewrite the questions to encourage every learner in the class to participate.

So in the above example the questions may be reframed in the following manner.

1. Describe how energy is important in carrying out work.
2. How will you describe the different forms of energy to your friend.

Accept Collaborative Answers
3. Always Accept Answers or Assignments from learners who worked collaboratedly.
In class, any questions or assignment you give, ensure that all learners participate in arriving at the answers.

Why Should You Teach Collaborative Skills?
Every Ghanaian child is expected to learn and practice Collaborative Skills.

The world today  basically operates on Collaboration.

No country or nation can exist independently without the support of others. Even the most advanced countries collaborate with other countries in one form or the other. 

Teaching Collaboration Skills is a unique opportunity to provide learners with one of the most important and a necessary skills for human existence.

Also, when Collaboration Skills is developed among learners then we stand the chance of developing other important Soft Skills such as

How To Stop Yelling in the Classroom? - AminuwritesTv


I must confess. 

As a teacher, there was no day I don't yell or shout in the classroom. Sometimes, to prevent this situation, I will resort to the Cane. 

And as a parent, hmmmm. Ugh! I can't count.
There are several educators and parents who find it difficult to control their children and hence result to yelling, the use of the cane or in some extreme situation insults.
Children would forever remain complex beings we would have to deal with as educators.

Michael Linsin explains: “When you yell, you train your students to listen to you only when you raise your voice. In other words, they learn that unless you’re shouting, you must not really mean it.” 

Yelling is the chief tool that most desperate educators or parents adopt to control children.

Yelling is a costly mistake.

Here is how...

1. Yelling is a Temporal solution to a permanent situation.
Children will only listen to you when you yell.  They will always create a situation for you to yell.

2. Yelling begets more yelling.
As you try to yell to control your classroom, you will have to yell over and over again. The children will also yell and create avenues for you to yell since they've seen it is your Habit.

3. Children emulate parents or teachers who yell.
You may be yelling probably because your parents or teachers may have yelled at you.
You don't want to teach your children bad habits.

4. Yelling may increase your chances of getting hypertension or some related health condition.
Research has shown that most people who yell or shout have high chances of becoming hypertensive.

5. Yelling increases the rate of anger.
Continuous yelling would increase the rate of anger in you.
It may lead you to do what you wished you would not do under normal circumstances.

But, in this 21st Century, yelling and shouting do not get result in the classroom. There are Creative Techniques every Educator can use to prevent shouting or yelling in the classroom.

1. The use of Signals.
Creative Educators use signals to prevent yelling in the classroom. There several creative Signalling Techniques you can use as an educator. 


Here are some Simple but Creative Signalling Techniques.

1. Repeating of Words or Sentences.
2. Clapping
3. Shaking the Signal (A bottle containing gravels or sand)
4. Quick Silence

2. Setting Classroom Rules
With the help of the learners, design and set effective Classroom Rules. These Rules should be simple. The Facilitator must rehearse the Rules with Learners every day. The Facilitator must also obey these Rules.
The Rules should be placed where every learner would see it without any difficulty.

3. Teach with Teaching & Learning Resources.
Teaching with Resources is a Creative way of minimizing Disruptive behaviours in the classroom.
We must always use TLRs during our teaching bad learning process. Most of the disruptive behaviours in the classroom is as a results of the inability of the learners to understand or comprehend what is being taught in the classroom.

4. Give learners Activities to Perform
Always provide learners with creative activities to perform. These activities should aim at developing certain desirable competencies such collaboration, communication, etc in learners.

Yelling, shouting or nagging has No Place in the 21st Century Classroom. Stop it before it Stops you.
Use Creative Techniques in dealing with today's Classroom Challenges.

Truthfully, in Creative Environment no one should ever yell, yelling is a verbal act of aggression. Aggression and/or violence is the product of an exhausted mind, and its a dead end in regards to productivity.

Don't ever yell or shout because when you yell as a consequence for a behavior, you are either reinforcing or creating an avenue for your learners or children to continue with their behaviour.

Hello, 

Hope grace and mercy find you. 

It's a holiday. 

But, have you thought of this " Why do children remember Lyrics music or scenes in movies but cannot remember what was taught in classroom?"

I decided to understand, this because it is disheartening to teach children and they cannot recollect what was taught. 

So I decided to undertake a surgery of a typical Ghanaian Music and Movie. 

Here are the things I found.

1. Lyrics (words)

2. Sound

3. Visuals/Pictures/Images

4. Concept and Content

5. Packaging 

But, but is there any difference between a teacher and an Artist? 

No. We are all the same. A Great Artist is a Great Teacher and a Great Teacher is a Great Artist. 

The problem in our schools is that most teachers do not use good and conversational words (Lyrics). 

We also do not use sound or Images during our teaching and learning process. 

Most of of our lessons are not packaged. They are raw and unattractive. 

Children like adults cherished packaged information. 

Musicians do not just sing, they plan (Lesson Planning), look for the best sound (Assembling Teaching Resources), submit work for editing (Vetting) and then begin to sell their product (lesson) to their audience (learners). 

They value their audience (learners) and therefore take pain in planning and the choice of content. 

If the music flops they don't blame market (children). They look for solutions and come back with better one or a remix of the old one. 

So, please it is time you teach like the musician or an Artist. 

Children like songs. Children love images. Children love music. 

Be the teacher you would like for yourself and children.

In this discussion we would be looking at the topic : Who tied the Teacher's Hands?

Most of the things we use to do in schools such as hitting, spanking,  caning, etc have all been banned in Ghanaian schools. 

This situation has left most teachers handicapped when it comes to training children. 

Some believe that their hands have been tied and therefore cannot do anything. So it is a common sight these days to see children with long nails, overgrown hair, bleached skin, sexy school uniforms, etc.  

But, can we blame the teachers? May be yes. But, I think it's No.  

Yes because, at least to the best of my knowledge every school has at least a copy (Soft copy/Hard Copy) of Positive Discipline Tools designed by the Guidance and Counseling Division of the Ghana Education Service. 

But, No because most teachers have little or No information on the Positive Discipline Tools. 

Children need to be trained, coached and mentored.

Today's child is totally different from yesterday's child. Our punishment and corrections strategy must also change to meet the 21st Century training needs of our children. 

We, must not sit and watch these kids deteriorate. Get a copy of the Positive Discipline Tools from your Headteacher or School Improvement Support Officer, or the District Guidance and Counseling Coordinator to abreast yourself with modern and tested correction and punishment strategies for the 21st Century Child.

School is in Session now. Teaching during thisperiod is indeed a difficult task.

Corona has come to affect our life styles. It will take a long time for things to be normal.


It is during times like this that the expertise and efficiency of great teachers like you are put to test.

Teaching in Mask is one of the most difficult task for all teachers.
This means a paradigm shift in the way we teach.

Creative Pedagogy should be used and adopted by all teachers during this pandemic to make our lessons less stressful and enjoyable.

Activity Based lessons should be activated in our classrooms to reduce long talks and 'sermons'.

This should however be done tackfully to avoid children contacting and engaging unduly with their peers.

We must as all times ensure that our children, colleagues and ourselves are all in masks.

We are all going digital. Churches, Mosques, Schools, Markets, etc. 

Teachers, headteachers are required to have some basic Technological skills.

We are all advised to acquire an Internet Enabled Device. 

But, there are 4 Basic Apps you should have on your phone as a teacher. There may be more. 

But, for this discussion we are going to just look at just 4. 

1. WPS

This App works like your Microsoft Office on your computer. You can use it to create and open documents, create and open Spreadsheet, etc. The App helps you to open and read PDF files. This means you can type all your letters, create a Workbook, etc. 

2. Adobe Scan.

A very great App for teachers. Download it. It is free. Use it to scan all your documents (Certificates, Testimonials, Promotion Letters, Appointment Letter, Upgrading Letters, etc.)

3. Google Drive. 

It is a great up to store all your documents, contacts, pictures, videos, etc. 

Gone are the days when you lost friends and love ones contacts. 

One good thing about this App is the fact that data stored can be accessed on any device. 

4. My NTC App

This is a must have App for all teachers in the Basic and Senior High Schools. Every teacher, public or private must have this App install on his or her phone. 

5. Office 360

This App is similar to Microsoft Office on your computer. You can use it for your documents, spreadsheets, presentations, etc.

6. Dropbox

This App is a cloud storage or an Online Storage App for storing files, etc. You can use it to store your documents, certificates, letters, etc. 

7. CamScanner

This is an App purposely for scanning documents. You can use it to scan all your documents, certificates, letters, etc and keep it on your device or on a Cloud Storage. 

8. Photomath 

This is a great App for working mathematics. It gives step by step solutions to maths problems. What I like about this App is its in-built Calculator and ability to recognise handwriting.

9. Memrise 

This is a great App for learning new language and improving knowledge in an existing language. The App trains you to speak as a native of that language. 

10. Google Classroom

This App helps you to teach and organise your lessons. You can give assignment, exercises and Mark. It is so easy to teach. 

You can invite other teachers to teach with you as co - teachers. 

11. Curiosity

A great App that helps in effective reading, writing and thinking. It has several videos and text based information. 

12. Maths - Tricks 

This App helps you with simple Maths Tricks to help solving maths easier. It covers several Maths Concepts and topics. 

13. Lumosity 

This App helps in brain development and improves thinking. This is best brain development App.

14. Edmodo

A great App to improve communication among teachers, students, and parents. Communication is made easier. Real time message or instant messages can be sent within seconds. 

15. TalkEnglish 

As the name suggests, this App helps to improve listening and speaking skills. The lessons are Conversation based.

16. Kahoot 

This is an App that can be used to provide activities for children whiles in school or at home. It presents assignments in a form of a game to motivate children to learn. 

17. ClassDojo

This App helps teachers and parents to come together. It helps the teachers to send updates to parents on their children's performance.

18. SPM Science 

This is a great App for enhancing deeper understanding of science. It is a good App for Science Students, Teachers and Candidates.

19. Snapask

This is wonderful App to help children do their homework. It is so easy to use. Just take a shot of your questions and in few seconds you have the answer.

20. Schoology

This is a school management software for teachers and schools. Download and set up. It is easy to use.

21. Flashcards Deluxe 

An App for improving vocabulary and reading. Words are arranged using Flashcards. It has a Test - to - speech audio feature. 

22. Chemist 

This is a great App for helping students practice their Chemistry lessons. 

23. Remind 

A great App for passing information from teachers to students. Teachers can give instant and real time messages to students. 

24. Seesaw

This is an App that helps students to keep and arrange their work. They can arrange PDFs, Videos, etc. The App serves as an Online Portfolio for students. 

25. Chegg study

This is an App that can be help students perform assignments, exercises and project works. It is a very good App for students. 

26. Knudge.me

A good App for learning English Language. It has thousands of vocabulary, idioms, synonyms, etc 

27. Programming Hub

This is great App for Primary Schools educators and ICT Teachers at the JHS and SHS. It has several lessons in programming such Java, C++, etc...

28. ArchPlus

A great App which uses 2D and 3D Designs to explain concepts. 

29. Learn2Learn

This is a great App to help teachers learn different fields of study. It is a onestop App for learning everything.

30. Fullamark

This App helps you study and answer questions. It has host of learning resources for everybody.

31. EDpuzzle

This makes learning fun and easy. Lessons are delievered using notes and videos.

32. Grammar Checker

This is a great App for checking your grammar. You will only paste the sentence and it checks the grammar for you, providing suggestions, etc. 

33. World Atlas

This App works like an Atlas. It is a digital atlas. You can get information of all the countries around the world.

34. SoloLearn

This is a great App for teaching Coding in a fun and easy way. It is a great App for primary teachers, JHS ICT/SHS Teachers. You can learn Coding easily using this App.

35. OneNote 

This is a great App is a great Note Taking App. Days of taking notes with paper and pen is over.

36. Zoom 

This is a video conferencing App. You can use it for Staff Meetings, PTA Meeting, Weekend Classes, etc.

The availability of books, reading materials, pictures, in our homes would help enhance reading among our children. It helps make our homes reader or learner friendly.

There are simple ways we can help our children learn. 

Getting a secured place at home to help our children sit and learn is an added advantage. 

Purchase a table and chair and place it at a secured place in the room and label it appropriately, example "Study Corner" or "Reading Corner"

Best Tips for Successful Interview.

Learn the skill of interviewing:

ON THE DAY OF INTERVIEW

👉Be at the venue an hour before time.

👉Know your Interview Room.

👉Sit closer to the Interview Room or at designated place provided by the organisers.

👉Try recalling some basic facts about education, teaching, learning, etc.

👉Don't worry if you are not able to recall. This occurs due to a phenomenon known as "Mental Black Out".

👉Be relaxed. Drink little water depending on the weather. Avoid cold water when the weather is cold. This causes frequent urination.

👉Interview is not an examination where you receive "powers" from others. Don't move to where others have grouped discussing the interview.

👉Look for the registration sheet and register.

👉When it time for the Interview to begin get all your particulars organised, pray and get Going.....


DURING THE INTERVIEW

👉Knock and wait till you hear enter

👉When you enter Greet them politely and wait till you are asked to sit before you sit.

👉Sit gently and thank them.

👉Be relaxed. Humbled. Optimistic. Honest and Confident.

👉Ask for explanation of questions when you do not understand.

👉Answer the question honestly and dispassionately.

👉Where you don't know the answer to a question,  be honest and accept your ignorance. You are not Google to know and keep every information.


AFTER THE INTERVIEW

👉Thank them and leave when you are told to go.

👉Do not engage in post - mortem after the Interview.

👉Go home and thank your creator and pray for success.

5 Things Every Coach Should Avoid During PLC.
Professional Learning Community Sessions are an integral part of the Standard Based Curriculum for Ghanaian Schools.
However, there are 5 Things, there could be more, practices that every Coach should avoid during PLC Sessions.

1. Know it all attitude.
Nobody is the sole reservoir of knowledge. We all have some idea about topic. Some may be right or wrong. But, we need to be given a chance. This will make every body to be ease and contribute to discussions on the floor.
Coaches should provide the opportunity for all participants to express their views and opinions on all issues. Wrong or Unknown answers should be handled professional to avoid ridiculing the contributor.

2. Ask Closed Ended Questions
Closed Ended Questions are questions which do not encourage others to contribute during PLC Sessions. These questions have obvious answers. However, Coaches should ask Open Ended Questions during PLC Sessions to make all participants active.

3. Choose topics that interest them.
Most Coaches would like to choose topics which interest them, so that they can deliver without any difficulty.  However, such topics may not interest the participants.  Coaches should allow all participants to identify difficult topics or concepts, so that such topics may be discussed during PLC Sessions.  This will encourage all participants to be active.

4. Always take lead during PLC Sessions
Coaches should not always lead discussions in a PLC Sessions.  They should allow other participants to take the lead and bring out their ideas. This will allow all others to contribute and participate in the session. Sometimes,  other participants may do the simulation and demonstration lessons.

5. Lead a PLC Session without preparation and planning
Most Coaches believe a PLC Session is another Staff Meeting. No. PLC Sessions are beyond Staff Meetings.  The Coach, Resource Person and others who may play some roles at PLC Session should prepare adequately before the start of the session. They should gather all information and resources before the session commences.
