How To Teach Reading Without Textbooks? - Aminuwrites Tv

How To Teach Reading Without Textbook?

Most of the schools in Ghana have little or no TextBook.

But, the situation has become the norm rather than the exception in Public Basic Schools.

This has left many teachers stranded. Some have resorted to Photocopying parts of books to be used as Reading Materials in the classroom.

But, is Textbook Really Relevant? TextBook is very relevant.

However, in the 21st Century TextBook is gradually and increasingly losing its relevance.

Today, children and even the adults are not interested in reading long text.

We don't have that time to read an entire book or material over a long period.

The attention span of people towards reading Textbook has dropped significantly.

These days even Musicians who sometimes ago were producing Albums have all resorted to just a single Track.

Reading has taken another dimension. So must the Teaching of Reading.

Most of the people against Textbook claim Textbook limits the Reader's Scope of Learning, produces Stereotyped Learners and limits children's vocabulary developments.

How to Teach Reading in the 21st Century?

There are Simple but effective ways to teach Reading without the use of Textbooks.

1. Pictures Approach

2. Sentences Approach

3. Phonic Approach

Pictures Approach

In this approach, the Facilitator use pictures to Teach Reading.

The Facilitator display the Picture (s) on the board.

Learners are expected to mention what they can see in the picture.

How To Teach Reading Without Textbook?

The Facilitator writes down what learners have identified from the picture.

The Facilitator turn the words or items identified meaningful Sentences, Paragraphs or Passages.

Learners are assisted to identify and pronounce unfamiliar words.

Learners take turns to read the passage or text with guidance from the Facilitator where necessary.

Questions from the passage or text are asked to check for understanding of text.

Watch The Video Here

2. The Sentence Approach

The Facilitator writes s simple sentence on the chalkboard and ask learners to read.

Questions are asked based on the Sentence on the Board.

Eg.

Esi did not come to school today.

Questions...

1. Who did not come to school today?

2. Who was absent from school today?

3. Why was Esi absent from school today?

4. What will happen to Esi if she comes to school tomorrow?

5. Who else is absent today? Etc.

The Facilitator assist learners to answer the questions in sentence form.

3. Phonic Approach

There are Several Phonic Reading Approach.

These 10 are the most important and very necessary.

But, why should I do these Ten Things?

You have to do these Ten things because....

1. It will reduce your workload for the term or year.

2. It will make all your children come to school everyday.

3. The stress, fatigue and health related problems associated with this work would be reduced if not eliminated, when you practice these Ten Simple Things.

4. Get you promoted faster.

5. Improve your performance.

6. Finally, it will improve your performance as a teacher.

Now, it is time to learn about these Ten Things Every Facilitator Should Do Before School Reopens.

1. Set Goals for the Term/Semester

What do you want to achieve this term? What were you unable to achieve last term/Semester/Year?

What are some of the things you want to see in your learners?

What Special Skills do you aimed at developing in the children.

And finally, what are the main Competencies or Skills does the Curriculum/Syllabus want you to achieve for your class.

Ask your Headteacher to know the Selected Theme, Directions and the School Objectives for the Term/Semester.

2. Develop an Action Plan for the Term/Semester/Year.

Every Facilitator must write down the Action Plan. This plan should contain what you want to address during the Term/Semester/Year.

You must develop the Action Plan based on your Stated Goals and General Objectives for the Term/Semester/Year.

Your Action Plan should also aimed addressing all issues in the school including Out of Classroom Activities.

The Scheme of Learning Should Contain all the Strands, Sub-strands, Topics, Teaching Resources, etc.

4. Assemble Teaching Resources

Every Facilitator must Assemble all the Resources he/she would be using during the Term/Semester.

These materials should be organised in Themes and Sections.

Some of these materials may be purchased or obtained for Free.

You will have to get all these materials before school resumes so that it makes you ready for the task ahead.

Good, let see the Next Thing....

5. Write Down the Names of Resource Persons.

In the 21st a teacher should not teach throughout the term with engaging a Resource Person.

Nobody is a repertoire of knowledge and there at any given time would need the services of a Resource Persons.

Your Resource Person may be colleagues in the school, from the office, in the community, including Artisans, Nananom, Artists, Specialist, etc.

It during this period that you write their names down and begin contacting them.

Use the period to the date, time and topic you would like them to be in the school and address.

Sometimes, you would have to move out of the classroom and go to the resource persons directly.

Let us see the Next thing,

6. Set Up Your Classroom.

In the 21st Century Effective Teaching and Learning would not take place without a well Resourced Classroom or Environment.

You have to design the classroom in such a way that it addresses selected Themes, Strands, Sub-strands, Topics etc in the Curriculum.

Classroom Set Up can be using simple things like Cardboards, Manila Cards, Magazines, Newspapers, Calendars, etc...

This is to arm you with the relevant information concerning your work as teacher.

This is should be a constant practice.

You may devote a special time during the day to read on all documents regarding your work as a teacher.

8. Decide on the Assessment Techniques

There are various forms of Assessment. This include Assessment for Learning, Assessment As Learning, and Assessment As Learning.

Decide on which of them you would be using most.

Set your own date and time to administer your Summative Assessment.

Decide on the Approach to use after Every Summative Assessment.

KG Department

For those in the KG Department, you are to Assess the Learners every day or you can do it on Fridays.

All Assessment records should be kept in the Assessment/Recording Register.

(You can contact me for a copy - 233244299706.

It is these records that you would used for appraising the KG Learner.

THERE SHOULD NOT BE ANY PAPER AND PENCIL EXAMS FOR KG CHILDREN AT THE END OF THE TERM.

Buy, for those in the Primary School,

You will have to continue using the SBA System.

This system allows you to contact some Exams after Every 4 Weeks.

The Results of these Exams should be recorded in the SBA Register.

However, depending on where you find yourself, some districts have adopted a two - week Exams or Class Tests.

You will have to follow that arrangements if that is where you find yourself.

But, for those at the JHS,

You may adopt an extended version of the SBA and record same in the SBA Register.

You may organise your Exams fortnightly, Monthly, etc depending on the arrangements in your school or district.

The Next thing to do...

9. Design All Your Assessment Materials.

Design and Develop all your Worksheets.

You have to take care of your diet. Watch you eat and drink.

Reduce fats and sugary food.

Drink water always.

Manage your health. Don't just anything because you want fill your stomach.

5 Things Every Coach Should Avoid During PLC Session

5 Things Every Coach Should Avoid During PLC.
Professional Learning Community Sessions are an integral part of the Standard Based Curriculum for Ghanaian Schools.
However, there are 5 Things, there could be more, practices that every Coach should avoid during PLC Sessions.

1. Know it all attitude.
Nobody is the sole reservoir of knowledge. We all have some idea about topic. Some may be right or wrong. But, we need to be given a chance. This will make every body to be ease and contribute to discussions on the floor.
Coaches should provide the opportunity for all participants to express their views and opinions on all issues. Wrong or Unknown answers should be handled professional to avoid ridiculing the contributor.

2. Ask Closed Ended Questions
Closed Ended Questions are questions which do not encourage others to contribute during PLC Sessions. These questions have obvious answers. However, Coaches should ask Open Ended Questions during PLC Sessions to make all participants active.

3. Choose topics that interest them.
Most Coaches would like to choose topics which interest them, so that they can deliver without any difficulty.  However, such topics may not interest the participants.  Coaches should allow all participants to identify difficult topics or concepts, so that such topics may be discussed during PLC Sessions.  This will encourage all participants to be active.

4. Always take lead during PLC Sessions
Coaches should not always lead discussions in a PLC Sessions.  They should allow other participants to take the lead and bring out their ideas. This will allow all others to contribute and participate in the session. Sometimes,  other participants may do the simulation and demonstration lessons.

5. Lead a PLC Session without preparation and planning
Most Coaches believe a PLC Session is another Staff Meeting. No. PLC Sessions are beyond Staff Meetings.  The Coach, Resource Person and others who may play some roles at PLC Session should prepare adequately before the start of the session. They should gather all information and resources before the session commences.

5 Things Every Coach Should Do During PLC Session

Professional Learning Community (PLC) is a meeting of Professional Facilitators and other educators to share and help one another, to improve teaching and learning and professionalism.
According to the Ghana Education Service, PLC should be organised once a week, preferably Wednesday, an hour before the closing time.

1. Take Records
There should be records of meeting of every PLC Session every week. This record should be kept by the Coach, CEO and the the school. The records should contain Attendance, and summary of all the issues discussed.

2. Encourage Active Participation
Most Facilitators would not talk at PLC Sessions based on the following reasons:
1. Fear of making mistakes in grammar or content.
2. Insecurity or the fear of been attack or victimized after a suggestion
3. Topics that Do not affect them directly.

It is the duty of the Coach and the CEO to solve the above problems and more to make PLC Sessions participatory.

3. Encourage participants to give Suggestions.
PLC Coaches should provide the needed environment for Facilitators to make contributions and recommendations. During every sessions, the Coach should review progress made after the last PLC Sessions. The recommendations and contributions made should be implemented to make it easy for facilitators to make more contributions. They can do this with CEOs to monitor the progress made.

4. Time Concious
PLC Sessions should not unduly delay or seem to be a time wasting exercise. Time should be given a priority during PLC Sessions.  This will motivate the facilitators like PLC Sessions.

5. Facilitators Directed Discussions
PLC Coaches should make sure they provide opportunity for facilitators to bring out what affects them directly during their teaching and learning.  Coaches may also select topics in collaboration with the Facilitators to discuss.

How well do we know our learners?

The story of Fatima is a wake up call for all teachers and people who deal with children.

A girl by name Fatima went to school in the neighbouring village where she wasn't known well.

For three weeks, she came to school late and every time the teacher punished her.

On the fourth week, Fatima didn't attend school at all and many thought she had *GIVEN UP* on school due to the everyday punishment.

However, Fatima reported again on fifth week and this time she came earlier than everybody.

When the teacher came to class, Fatima was punished for not attending school the previous week but the teacher was also kind enough to commend her for coming early that day, stating that the punishments had finally yielded some results.

Just then, Fatima asked if she could say something and the teacher gave her permission.

*She started :*

_"I've been raised up by a single mother without a brother or a sister. Five weeks ago, my mother fell ill and was hospitalized. The three weeks I came late, I had to prepare something for her every morning and pass by the hospital to deliver the same. Unfortunately, mother passed away last week and that's the reason I didn't come to school. We buried her last Friday. Today I came early since I didn't have to prepare anything or even pass by the hospital. And now that she is gone, I will always be here early''_

As she sat down, no one in the whole class was able to hold their tears, the teacher was not spared either.

How well do we know our learners.  We should go beyond knowing the names of our learners. We should know their names, their parents, their local communities, their hobbies, dreams, fears,  likes and dislikes, etc.

We should go beyond the ordinary. Ordinary teachers just know their learners' name and class performance.

We all have issues that we have to deal with.  So do the children we teach.
That is why the rule of natural justice demands that we give fair hearing.  But teachers should apart from giving fair hearing, apply judgements based on compassion.

So next time your learner, misbehave, just don't start rebuking him or her, but apply compassion.

Time to reduce the Stress

Many schools are trying hard and increasing workload of teachers with the hope that it will increase performance.

This will only increase rote learning and memorization of facts. It will also results in schools passing examination and yet getting their graduate into the Unemployment line.

We should not allow examination to be the only yardstick for success or teacher performance.
Every year, SPAM is organised in schools that did not perform in the Examinations. Government pride itself for doing better that its predecessor in education when the examination results is better as compared to the previous year's.

Passing Examination is not the main aim of Education.

Teachers and school heads do everything humanly possible,  and even impossible just to make their students pass an external examinations. But, do we blame them? No.  I don't think so.  We have made the system that way.

Schools lack the necessary materials for teaching and learning and yet, teachers are pressurized to produce better examination results.

The sooner you, me, parents and indeed government realises that education is not synonymous with passing an examination,  the better it will be for all of us.

Teachers should not be coerced into bringing out examination experts and passers.

So the next PTA Meeting, SMC Meeting and SPAM in our schools and communities should not focus solely on the examination results.

We should stop labelling some schools and teachers as non performing schools or teachers just because their students did not pass an examination. Schools should be allowed to develop the human faculty. Teachers should be allowed to mould the next generation of leaders.

The next generation would not depend on examination results to be employed.  High GPAs are no longer the qualification for employment.

Teachers should be allowed to focus on developing innovative, resourceful, resilient, creative and highly skilled individuals, for the future.

Examination is just another waste of time in the developments of the child.
Many dreams have been shuttered due to failure in an examination.  We should not continue this way.
Why should we continue ripping our country with the best individuals just because they failed in an examination.

Why do we forced every child in Ghana to study Mathematics,  Integrated Science,  Social Studies and English Language? Why? Why should you get a certain grade before pursuing a particular occupation. Why should we forced our children at the universities and colleges to learn subjects and concepts they may never used in real world? Why should we force every child in the Primary School to memorize the "Times Table" or multiplication table? What crime have the children done?
We need total shift in our mindset.

Schools should be resourced with enough and adequate materials to make teaching and learning activity based.

This is what I believe would save the next generation.
